Mill Creek is a peaceful
executive development with homes ranging from the high 300s to more
than a million dollars. Mill Creek is located 30 minutes west of Des
Moines, on the site of a historic wagon road and turn-of-the-century
grist mill. In this pristine river valley you'll find abundant wildlife,
exotic wildflowers, towering stands of hardwood timber, and spectacular
vistas. |

cccMill Creek is a different
kind of development designed to harmonize with nature, not overcome
it. Meandering through the scenic valley is the south fork of the Raccoon
River which, along with dense forests and high prairie meadows, provides
a balanced ecology for wild turkey and deer. Such serene, unspoiled terrain
is fast disappearing from central Iowa. Mill Creek is a rare find, indeed. c |
| cccFor
centuries this river valley has cast its spell. In the 1700s tribes
of woodland Indians gathered here in summer, then dispersed to more
sheltered camps for winter. Traders and trappers roamed the valley until
the mid-1800s when wagonloads of pioneers from Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania
arrived to settle the land. One, Samuel Bilderbeck, an early settler
from Missouri, built a buhrstone water mill on the banks of the South
'Coon, used first to saw logs into lumber for building houses and barns,
then as a grist mill grinding spring wheat into flour and autumn corn
into tasty cornmeal. |
| cccToday,
urban refugees as well as died-in-the-wool country folks are finding this
river valley a peaceful place to live, a short commute to the city, yet
far enough out to enjoy country breezes, wildlife sightings, starry nights,
hikes through the woods, and abundant quiet. |
